Project

Construction of a new office and commercial building

In a central location in Duisburg, an office building is being constructed on Portmouthplatz as a new entrance to the city, between Mercatorstrasse and the main railway station. The longitudinal sides of the building are offset by approx. 30cm on each floor along the outermost axis and thus, in combination with the cantilever on the north and south sides, creates a rotating character that opens onto Königstraße. The very dynamic, fanning out the facades on the south and north sides of the building underline the central theme of the cantilevers. The inter-storey protrusion is 2.70m, with a maximum protrusion on the 5th floor of 13.50m

Services provided

panta engineers was responsible for the structural design of the building for all work phases of the HOAI. For the cantilevering of the north and south facades, a structural solution was designed which, despite the considerable overhangs, does not require any pre-stressing or significant steel components. To achieve this, complex deformation calculations were carried out, the results of which were fully verified by test-loading. The design of the excavation pit was completed up to the preliminary phase. The ambitious excavation pit design was demanding due to the inner-city location, the direct adjacency to the motorway tunnel of the A 59 as well as the underground railway line running orthogonally to the construction site.

Southern Elbe Bridge Hamburg

Project

Installation of a dynamic axle load scale

The A1 motorway crosses the Elbe River via the Southern Elbe Bridge. In the direction of Lübeck is a riveted plate girder bridge from 1938. Due to the date of construction, usually lower load assumptions compared to the current standard lead to difficulties in the verification of fatigue. In order to ensure the remaining service life of the bridge as long as possible, a realistic assessment is required. One aspect is the determination of the traffic loads occurring at the bridge location, which may be lower than the current code-based traffic loads. For this purpose, a dynamic axle load scale with a high accuracy was installed in the run-up to the southern Elbe Bridge, with which the traffic load for each lane under running traffic can be determined. The measured data will form the basis for the assessment of the bridge, whose residual service life can now be determined with greater accuracy.
